What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that consists of thin, flexible fibers. These fibers are resistant to heat, electricity, and corrosion and have a wide range of commercial applications. Asbestos exposure can lead to serious health problems.

When it was introduced, asbestos was widely used in construction as an effective insulator and could be added to cloth, paper, cement, plastic, etc. It was considered safe until the late 1980s when studies found that asbestos dust could become permanently trapped in the body and cause inflammation and scarring. If a person is genetically susceptible to developing cancer or autoimmune diseases, he or she may develop a disease later in life due to asbestos exposure.

Asbestos-related diseases pose a serious health risk to workers, consumers, and those living in the vicinity of asbestos products. Asbestos-related lung diseases can be deadly and are notoriously hard to detect. When airborne, it can cause multiple ailments. Inhaling even a small number of asbestos fibers can lead to the development of deadly cancers decades after the exposure.

Types of Asbestos
There are six forms of asbestos that fall into two categories: serpentine and amphibolite.

Amphibole asbestos fibers can be recognized by their straight, jagged shape. Five types are recognized:

  • Actinolite
  • Amosite
  • Anthophyllite
  • Crocidolite
  • Tremolite

Identifying Asbestos Products

Asbestos can be found in some home construction materials including insulation, siding, and floor tiles. If it is not clearly marked, the only way to detect asbestos is to send samples of the product to a lab or to hire an accredited asbestos inspector.

Asbestos materials are divided into two categories:

  • Friable Asbestos Materials:
Friable asbestos materials are easily crumbled by hand. Examples include old asbestos pipe insulation and talcum powder contaminated with asbestos. Friable asbestos can easily release harmful dust into the air.

  • Nonfriable Asbestos Materials Asbestos cement slabs and vinyl asbestos tile are non-friable asbestos construction products that can last more than a lifetime. These products keep asbestos fibers safely trapped as long as they are undisturbed. If the product is sawed, scraped or smashed, it may release some of the fibers over time.

Asbestos Abatement, is it important?

Asbestos is not easy to detect because it is usually mixed with other materials. That’s why professionals are needed to evaluate the material. The asbestos abatement process involves the removal of asbestos materials. Only companies who have been licensed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are allowed to remove asbestos materials from buildings, homes, or worksites. If asbestos-containing materials are not properly removed by an asbestos abatement company, they can release potentially deadly asbestos fibers into the air.

Although removing asbestos-containing materials may obviously be safer than leaving them in place, it’s always best to consult with a certified asbestos abatement professional as to whether or not it is appropriate to leave the material where it is. The removal of asbestos-containing materials should be handled by professionals only.
